In memory of Father Henryk Ostach

In large numbers came also local people to honour the departed who transformed a small village in Malopolska into the capital of Polish beekeeping. Father Henryk Ostach was born on the 9th of December 1924 in Poznan. He died on the 1st of May 2011 in Gorlice.

As a versatile man, he was a Catholic priest with Ph.D. in theology, a passionate beekeeper and an avid advocate of beekeeping and bee products in medicine.

Soon after the WWII, he entered into the Religious Congregation of Philip Neri. He graduated from the Theological Seminary in Tarnow and in 1951 he became a priest. He also studied at the Catholic University of Lublin and he received his Ph.D diploma from the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow.


In 1960 he was appointed the rector of the presbytery in Kamianna where he popularized beekeeping. Father Ostach was the initiator of a number of social campaigns aiming at the improvement of local people's lives. He established the volunteer fire department with its fire station and its brass band. Most of all, he organized the first Regional Beekeeping Day in 1972 that resulted in building the Beekeeper House.

In 1981 Father Ostach was elected the chairman of the Polish Beekeeping Associations and he held this post for the next three terms. He started the annual National Beekeeping Days and the pilgrimages to Jasna Gora on the day of the Saint Patron of beekeepers, St. Ambrose. In addition, Father Ostach was actively engaged in the organization of the 31st Apimondia Congress in Warszawa.
He created the apitherapy centre in Kamianna where numerous scientists and doctors of medicine have participated in development of this medicine area in Poland.
