Album “Lemkoes and Lemkovina”

Album "Lemkoes and Lemkovina" is the most recent publication of the publishing house "Sadecki Bartnik". Why this album is not about bees? The explanation is very simple.

Many of our apiaries are located in the area of mountain ranges, namely Sadecki Beskid and Low Beskids. After World War II a native population of this region-Lemkoes was resettled to the western and northern parts of Poland.

Traces of their original and beautiful culture are still visible here and we come across them every day. First of all Lemkoes were farmers. As far-sighted people, they set up many apiaries beside their homesteads. Among descendants of the resettled population there are, at present. many known and recognised beekeepers.

This album with Jerzy Zak's beautiful photographs, Marta's Graban-Butryn texts and Wladyslaw Grabana's poems was published in remembrance of old residents of this land. The aim of this special book is to pay tribute to them.

lemkowie_okladka_1smJerzy Zak once wrote:

“There is such a land, located in the beautiful landscape of mountains and forests of the southern Poland between the Oslawa and Poprad rivers once called Lemkovina. The people here were hard working and happy to live in harmony with the surrounding nature and also to praise God in orthodox churches built by themselves. These people are called Lemkoes.

They led a peaceful life until orders were given one day! Lemkoes should be resettled for their not-committed sins. Thus, they left not only theirs homesteads, orthodox churches but most of all their memories of times spent on this land. They set off with basic belongings accompanied by ringing orthodox church bells. Their gehenna was about to start. Many years later longing for the place of birth of their parents, sons, daughters and grandsons whom were banished, they started coming back to the homeland. Today's Lemkovina, is an unpopulated, wild but still a beautiful landscape.

What is left are only the cupolas of orthodox churches, lonely roadside crosses, tracks after wells, foundations after homesteads, and feral orchards that bear testimony to old hosts of this land"

Nine chapters of this book comprehensively present information of old time and contemporary land of Lemkoes.
