The film "Honey Hunters" directed by Krystian Matysek presents the revival of traditional wild-beekeeping, the secrets of urban beekeeping and the fascinating life of bees. "Honey Hunters" is a life story of bees and men. The swarm has to be in constant movement in order to live. In order to explore the mysteries of the life of bees and to show them to the audience, the camera enters a present-day hive and a traditional wild beehive carved in the trunk of an aged tree. The action takes place across fields, wild forests, mountains and... large European and Asian cities.
The life of every colony is like the Cosmos in miniature that has its own long-time rules. Finally, the viewer will have the chance to see the birth of a bee, how the worker bees take care of the queen and how they fight with intruders to protect their hive (often for life and death). Furthermore, how nature and people are seen by a single bee that works very hard from dawn to dusk and thousands of bees that would do anything for their colony survival. Magdalena Poplawska, an actress of an avant-garde theatre, interested in ecology and a healthy lifestyle wants to learn the tradition and secrets of wild-beekeeping. Together we set off on a journey to Augustow in Poland, Bashkortostan in the Russian Federation and to Nepal. Besides, we learn wild-beekeeping and we also get to know the incredible relationship between bees and people.
Accompanied by Kamil Baj, an urban beekeeper, we travel across apiaries set up on the roofs of Warsaw buildings and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The natural environment of our planet has been built for many million years by hard-working bees. Today they die on an unprecedented scale. Urban beekeeping and reintroducing the tradition of wild-beekeeping – keeping wild bees in forests – seems to be one of the ways of saving them. Can we find the way by returning to the past? The film attempts to answer this question. Traditional wild- and today's beekeepers communicate despite the language, centuries and cultures barriers since they have been watching the wisdom of bees with diligence and also because they can learn from them.
